Stopover town for the St Jacques de Compostelle pilgrims, it was the Capital of Béarn for 2 centuries and fief protestant during the time of Jeanne d'Albret in the XVIth century.
Orthez has a rich, prestigious historical background ... the Old Bridge, a fortified work of the XIIIth century, the Moncade Castle, the house of Jeanne d'Albret, the Saint-Pierre church from the XIIIth and XIVth centuries.
Orthez is also a sporty and festive town. It attracts numbers of visitors for it's annual fetes.
